Bringing cheer to all Indian dog breeders, the Indian breed Mudhol Hound did Karnataka proud at the recent Bangalore Dog Show in Palace Grounds held on Nov. 27-28.

Early this year, the 92nd and 93rd All India Championship Dog Show held in the city, organized by the Mysore Kennel Club, featured as many as 27 Mudhols from Bagalkot, a district in North Karnataka.

The Bangalore Dog Show, organized by the Bangalore Kennel Club last week, had a number of Mudhol entries in the show.

But it is only recently that these hounds, registered with the Kennel Club of India, are competing with foreign breeds like Neapolitan, Great Dane, Bull Mastiff, German Shepherd and Rottweiler.

With Indian breeds not really popular, a constant effort is being made by the kennel authorities to bring forth Indian breeds in these all-India dog shows.
The club members put in a lot of effort to convince the Bagalkot farmers to bring their Mudhols to the city to participate in the show.

Rajalakshmi Balasubramanium, secretary of BKC said, “We paid for their travel and accommodation in the city, and we did not even charge them for entry in the ring.”
The Mudhols have never been in the limelight as their breeders—the farmers—are shy and unaware of the popularity of these dog shows in the city.
But the efforts paid off as it was a proud moment for the breeders and the dog lovers to cheer for an Indian breed.

“Yes, finally the Indian breeds are also a part of these dog shows,” said P.V. Yathindra of MKC. “The Mudhols did a fairly good job at field this time. But we have a long way to go.”
The Mudhol hound has originated from the Bagalkot region in North Karnataka and some parts of South Maharashtra. It is also known as the Caravan Hound.

It serves as a good companion dog for the village folks. Like all hounds, this breed is noted for its hunting and guarding skills.
